School of Education - George Mason University

Practicing educators interested in working with gifted students have several options available.

Gifted learners, like all students, need learning experiences that are organized by key concepts and principles rather than by facts. They need content relevant to their lives, activities requiring them to process important ideas at a high level, and products that cause them to grapple with meaningful problems and pose defensible solutions.

Graduate Certificate in Gifted Education

  • Courses are offered 100% online.
  • Courses may be used to apply for a Virginia Department of Education Endorsement in Gifted Education.
  • Application of these courses to a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction at a later date is not guaranteed. If considering a Master’s degree, we recommend applying to the M.Ed. program instead of the certificate.
  • The certificate requires submission of a graduate student application to the Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning: Gifted Education Certificate.
  • Visit the Graduate Certificate in Gifted Education webpage for more information.

Masters Program

  • Four of the courses may be used to apply for a Virginia Department of Education - Endorsement in Gifted Education.
  • Can be taken 100% online or blended (a combination of face-to-face and online courses).
  • The M.Ed. requires submission of a graduate student application to the Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning: Gifted Education M.Ed. Program.
  • Visit the Masters Program webpage for more information.

Non-degree Course Series for VA Gifted Endorsement

  • Great option for school district cohorts. Special cohort contract rates are available to school districts interested in offering this series to their educators.
  • Courses are offered 100% online.
  • Courses may be used to apply for a Virginia Department of Education Endorsement in Gifted Education.
  • Courses are taken as non-degree for educators who do not wish to seek further certification or degree. Educators may apply the credits (within six years) to the M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. Program advisor consultation required at the time of application.
  • If you are only interested in any or all of the four courses (no certificate or degree), you should apply for Graduate Non-Degree Studies.
  • Visit the Gifted Graduate Nondegree Studies webpage for more information.
