Admissions

Pre-Admission Requirements

  • Submit Endorsement Requirements Worksheet. See “Endorsement Requirements" below. In lieu of the 30 endorsement credits, applicants may submit ACTFL test scores and complete 2 three-hour courses in the target language. See ACTFL TEST for further details.
  • Register to take Praxis I test so that scores can be submitted by the application deadline to GMU institutional code 5827(please allow 4-6 weeks for scores to arrive). Applicants may submit qualifying SAT or ACT scores in lieu of Praxis I .

Endorsement Requirements

The program offers seven endorsements. An endorsement requirements worksheet should be submitted prior to the application for admission: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Spanish , or Latin. Complete the top portion and deliver or mail with copies of transcripts to Nanette Rutsch, Robinson A, room A 312 or Mail Stop 4B3. In lieu of the 30 endorsement credits, applicants may submit ACTFL TESTscores and complete 2 three-hour courses in the target language.

Application Deadlines

Students admitted for fall are eligible to begin course work in summer or fall term.

  • Fall and Summer: March 1
  • Spring: November 1

Non-Degree Studies

Applicants who have missed the deadline for submitting a complete graduate application and wish to begin taking courses, may take a course through Non-Degree Studies. However, a complete application for degree status must be submitted by the next application deadline.

Post Admission

  • Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) is now required for all teachers applying for initial licensure. Students must submit passing VCLA scores prior to internship (composite=470). For more information on the test and how to register, please visit: VCLA . Scores should be reported directly to GMU.
  • ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Written Proficiency Test (WPT) are required prior to internship effective spring 2008. See ACTFL TEST for further details.
  • In addition to these requirements, licensure candidates seeking endorsements in French, Spanish, and/or German must take and pass the Praxis II: French (169), Spanish (161), and/or German (162).
