Counseling and Development

Certificate: Post-Master's Counseling Licensure - Minimum of 15 credits

The post-master's Counseling Licensure Program (PCLC) is designed for individuals who possess a master's degree in counseling or a highly related field and seek at least 15 credits of post-graduate coursework to meet licensure requirements as a Virginia School Counselor or Licensed Professional Counselor. Students work with an adviser to finalize course selections from the list below. Substitutions may be approved to avoid duplication of previous course work. Applicants to the program should complete the Graduate School of Education Counseling and Development Program Admission Application.

In order to receive the Certificate in Post-Master's Counseling Licensure, students must complete at least 15 credits selected from the coursework as described below.

9-12 credits from the following courses:

Virginia School Counselor

Licensed Professional Counselor

3-6 credits from the following courses (with permission of the instructor):

Special Topics vary each semester, examples may include:

  • Diagnosis and Treatment Planning for Mental Health Professionals (1 credit hours)
  • Issues of Loss (1 credit hours)
  • School Violence (1 credit hours)
  • Counseling At-risk Youth (1 credit hours)
  • Urban Issues in Counseling (1 credit hours)
  • Eating Disorders (1-2 credit hours)
  • Counseling Individuals with Chronic Illness (1 credit hours)

3-6 credits (if needed; may be substituted for other courses)
