  • NPST: Teaching Historic Places with Diverse Populations Graduate Certificate

George Mason University’s general graduate admission requirements:

  • Submit an online application to the College of Education and Human Development.
  • Pay a nonrefundable $65.00 application fee by credit card.
  • Submit the Application for Virginia In-State Tuition Rates.
  • Submit an individual essay (750-1000 words required).
  • Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a GPA of 3.0 or better on the last 60 hours of undergraduate study (or admittance may be provisional). Submit two original transcripts from each institution you attended.
  • Submit letters of recommendation from two colleagues and one from your principal/supervisor.
  • Submit an IET Department Form
  • Be recommended for acceptance by the New Professional Studies–Teaching program faculty.

Additional NPST Program requirements:

  • Currently work in a school setting as a licensed teacher or other in-school practitioner. If you are applying to the Teaching Historic Places with Diverse Populations Graduate Certificate you must currently work as a classroom history, social studies or language arts teacher, historic site interpreter, education outreach coordinator or work with diverse populations of K-12 children and youth.
  • Submit an IET Department Form

Note: GREs are not required.

Tips for applying to the New Professional Studies–Teaching Program

Online Application:

  • Begin the online application process at http://admissions.gmu.edu/ApplyNow/
  • Click on “Apply for Graduate Studies”
  • Click the "CREATE ACCOUNT" button on the right.
  • Select Fall 2012 for your application term (even though classes will begin summer 2012)
  • Select Graduate Degree for the degree.
  • Select your Academic Interest:
    • Teaching, MA Professional Studies
    • NPST: Transformative Teacher Leadership-CERG
    • NPST: Teaching Historic Places with Diverse Populations-CERG

Essay:

  • When composing your essay, instead of using the general online essay instructions, IET would like you to explain why you chose NPST, why it appeals to you and why now is a good time for you to enroll in a Master’s/Certificate program (750-1000 words required). This is a personal narrative that is shared with our faculty. Please compose and spell check your online essay in a Word document first, then copy and paste it into the online application.

Letters of Recommendation:

  • One of your three required letters of recommendation must be from your school principal or supervisor.
  • Letters of recommendation can now be done by e-mail if you submit the addresses while applying online. Paper letters (sealed with a signature across the envelope flap) can be sent to address below.

Transcripts:

  • Official transcripts (and all supporting documents) should be sent to:

  • Documents only remain official if they are unopened.
  • Transcripts may arrive under a previous name. Please notify the CEHD Graduate Admissions office (cehdgrad@gmu.edu) if you think this has occurred.
  • Applications from students who attended Mason under a previous name will be entered under that previous name. To change the application to your new name, you must submit a Change Personal Information Request Form (http://cehd.gmu.edu/documents/) along with the official documents to CEHD Admissions.
  • Applicants submitting international credentials should check requirements at CEHD Admissions (http://cehd.gmu.edu/admissions/steps/) and submit their completed application at least 60 days prior to the domestic application deadline of July 1, 2012.

Department Form:

  • Teachers enrolled in NPST work in teams (2-6 members). When submitting your IET Department Form if you do not yet have teammates, leave those fields blank (names can be added later). Teammates can be from your teaching site or from another site close by. If you are unable to find teammates, we will help you find a team once you’re enrolled.

Application Status and Questions:

  • Your online application status will be available 2-3 weeks after you apply at https://masongrad.askadmissions.net/vip/. Please monitor and follow up to ensure timely completion.

Priority Deadline: For early consideration and placement, applications must be complete by May 30, 2012.
