International Baccalaureate Partnership
George Mason University’s Center for International Education with FAST TRAIN Programs has developed a two-track collaborative initiative that has been authorized by the International Baccalaureate (IB).
Elementary Education Virginia State Licensure-IB Teacher Award Level I (for Teacher Candidates) – Track I
- Apply to and follow the FAST TRAIN Elementary Education Program
- Complete elementary education course work and IB capstone course: Teaching and Learning the IB Primary Years (EDUC 621)
- Teach for one year in an IB school in a PYP program to complete internship requirement
- Become eligible to apply to IB for the Teacher Award Level I
Mason Certificate in Advanced IB Studies (for practicing IB teachers) and Optional Master’s Degree in ASTL - Track II
- Certificate covers domains in PYP (Primary Years Program), MYP (Middle School Program) and DP (IB Diploma Program)
- Five graduate courses lead to a 15-credit Mason Certificate in Advanced IB Studies that is authorized by the IB; after completion of the certificate, participants are eligible to apply to IB for a Teacher Award Level I
- Additional course work can lead to an optional Master’s degree in ASTL (Advanced Study in Teaching and Learning) that is also authorized by the IB; after completion of the master’s degree, participants are eligible to apply to IB for a Teacher Award Level II.
Completion of the entire recognized program of study and subsequent registration for the award meets the IB's minimum PD requirements for school authorization and evaluation. Successful completion of individual component parts does not. When participants register for the Level 1 Teacher Award, they receive a certificate from the IB, issued in Cardiff. Once participants have this certificate, they do not require further mandated IB professional development.
